International Workshop "In situ characterization of near-surface processes" in Eisenerz
The workshop will gather leading experts, as well as Post-Docs and Ph. D. students in the lively field of in situ surface characterization. Besides invited lectures, contributed talks, and poster sessions, also a round table discussion is planned to evaluate the future potential of the field. It is believed that the vicinity of the Styrian “Erzberg” (Iron ore mountain that has been mined for ages) will inspire lively and fruitful discussions during the four days.

Paper in Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Finaly our paper together with the Department of physical metallurgy and materials testing and the Erich Schmidt Institut has been printed in the Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Together with Harald Köstenbauer, Gerado Fontalvo Christian Mitterer and Josef Keckes a paper has been published on "Structure, stresses and stress relaxation of TiN/Ag nanocomposite films". The full citation and the link to the publisher is available in our list of publications. Gregor Hlawacek contributed AFM measurements of the surface morphology of this nanocomposite films.
NFN Organic Thin films Kickoff Meeting
The Kickoff Meeting for the second funding period of the FWF NFN "Organic Thin films" was held in Leoben on 26.02.2009.
The Meeting which was organized by W. Kern and held in the rooms of the Institute of Physics in Leoben was opened by W. Kern as and H. Sitter.
All NFN members gave short outlooks on the planned investigations and presented new results. The meeting was interupted by a buffet lunch at the Chair of atomistic modelling and design of materials. After the official part the latest papers in Science and Nature were celebrated with some champange. More images can be found in this zip Archive.

New paper on friction force measurements published
A new paper by Hlawacek, Shen, Teichert et al. has been published in the Journal of Chemical Physics.
The paper deals with FFM investigations performed in the frame work of Q. Shen's Diploma thesis on thin surface layers grown A. Lex from the ICTOS, TU-Graz. Photolithographical pattern inscribed in this films were visualized with the help of qualitative friction force measurements.
You can find the full text and links to the publisher in our publication list.
Abstract:
Precise control of surface properties including electrical characteristics, wettability, and friction is a prerequisite for manufacturing modern organic electronic devices. The successful combination of bottom up approaches for aligning and orienting the molecules and top down techniques to structure the substrate on the nano- and micrometer scale allows the cost efficient fabrication and integration of future organic light emitting diodes and organic thin film transistors. One possibility for the top down patterning of a surface is to utilize different surface free energies or wetting properties of a functional group. Here, we used friction force microscopy (FFM) to reveal chemical patterns inscribed by a photolithographic process into a photosensitive surface layer. FFM allowed the simultaneous visualization of at least three different chemical surface terminations. The underlying mechanism is related to changes in the chemical interaction between probe and film surface. ©2009 American Institute of Physics.
